SAP moves up the sustainability ladder with electric car initiative

SAP, providers of IT technology, is planning to increase the number of EV cars in their company fleet to 20 percent by 2020.

By 2020, the company aims to have one in five cars run on electrically powered engines.

This initiative was launched at SAP headquarters in Germany.

To mark the occasion, officials handed over the keys to the tenth EV car owner at SAP. Fifty more EV cars will join the fleet by the end of this year.

As part of this move, SAP unveiled the 50th EV charging station to be installed at its company headquarters.

SAP is developing a management solution to connect EV cars and charging stations in order to match employee’s mobility needs with the availability of EV charging capacity.

SAP will power the cars using100 percent renewable sources, according to office policy. This measure is part of a long-term mission aimed at returning greenhouse gas emissions to the year-2000 level by 2020, cutting down to half of the total carbon emission in 2007.

A total of 22,000 company cars accounted for 24 percent of overall carbon emissions in 2013. Global corporate objective can be achieved if a significant portion of the car fleet is converted to green energy. The energy efficiency gains achieved from various other initiatives should not get canceled out by growing car fleet. That is why the company is investing in e-fleet initiative and a carbon-neutral mobility concept.

SAP conducted a research in collaboration with many environmental and socio-ecological institutes on the range efficiency of EV cars.  Based on a field test involving 500 SAP employees, these institutes investigated how to make EV cars an integral part of company car fleets.

SAP employees can change from conventional to electric cars as they get an offer for battery subsidiary as part of the mobility program. This subsidy is sufficient to neutralize the differences in price between an electric car and a conventional car considering the tax benefits offered on order of EV company cars in Germany.
