Arby’s Restaurant, the sandwich chain, announced energy reduction savings as part of an effort to lessen environmental impact.

The sustainability efforts are a part of Arby’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy.

Arby’s Group achieved a 7.6 percent Energy Use Intensity (EUI) reduction due to various energy initiatives implemented as part of the Efficiency Matters program. This program helps to improve efficiencies in restaurants and reduce energy consumption.

ARG has set a goal of achieving 15 percent Energy Use Intensity reduction by 2015. ARG’s energy efficiency partners for this initiative were Ecova and Powerhouse Dynamics.

George Condos, president, CEO, ARG, said, “The efforts to improve performance towards energy-efficient practices were cost-effective. Managing energy as a controllable expense gives Arby’s an advantage, improves the bottom line and makes us responsible corporate citizens.”

In 2013-2014, ARG’s energy initiative focus was on implementing following makeovers like a new on/off schedule, hot water heater control adjustments, aerators on hand sinks, electronically commutated motors for WIB’s and new outdoor LED lights.

Around 90,247,788 KWh of electricity, equivalent to 62,230 metric tons of carbon and 303,106 therms (natural gas) which is equivalent to carbon emissions from consuming over 80,000 gallons of gasoline was saved in the period of 2011-13.

ARG implemented a number of energy efficiency upgrades like LED banding that saved 549,500 kWh, T12 to T8 interior lighting by saving 5,400, 000 kWh and LED exterior lighting that again saved 1,161,576 kWh.

ARG plans to achieve the energy reduction goals with initiatives to consider energy efficiency in all operations, create a culture that improves productivity and reduces environmental impacts, procure energy efficient equipment and ensure all levels of organization sharing the responsibility.
