The Innu First Nations of Mashteuiatsh, Essipit and Pessamit, together with EDF EN Canada, signed an agreement on the Rivière-du-Moulin Wind Project in the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve.

The Rivière-du-Moulin Wind Project, with a total capacity of 350MW, is under construction in two stages. The Phase I producing 150 MW will be commissioned in December, 2014 and the Phase II having a capacity of 200 MW will come online by the end of 2015.

The 20-year agreement evokes business relation structure among the involved companies. In addition, the agreement ensures suitable economic spinoffs. Once both phases have been commissioned Innu First Nations will get an opportunity to acquire a financial share in the project.

This agreement will help create benefits within the communities and provide First Nations a chance to become partners in a wind power project in Canada. It also reflects the shared desire to invest in development opportunities while promoting the economic impact of energy projects, said the chiefs of the three First Nations involved in the project.

Alex Couture, director, Project Development, Quebec, EDF EN Canada, explained, “The outcome of the discussions paved the way for this agreement, which will generate benefits for both parties throughout the life of the project.”

Al Kurzenhauser, CEO, EDF EN Canada, confirmed that this agreement is a proof of confidence by the three Innu communities and after completion this will be the largest Canadian wind farm under a single PPA.
