Siemens Energy has received type certification from DNV GL for the company’s D6 offshore wind turbine.

Evaluation involved assessment based on various parameters like design maturity of the turbine, manufacturing, installation, commissioning processes and related documentation.

The SWT-6.0-154, the model for which certificate was awarded, is equipped with a direct drive generator, rated at 6 MW and a 154 meter rotor.

The SWT-6.0-154 technology is designed to reduce the cost of wind turbines, Siemens said. With a tower head mass of only 360 tons the 6 MW machine is much lighter than other turbines. This lower weight provides much economic efficiency including assembly, transport, foundations, installation as well as operation.

Further, one SWT-6.0-154 turbine can supply up to 6,000 homes with clean wind power.

Through this certification, SWT-6.0-154 has gained a 25 year design lifetime; an additional 5 years compared to the previous period of other Siemens designed turbines.

With 43 percent of total revenue generated from green products and solutions, wind power and energy service are part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio.
