Solar-charged, new, green parking pay stations have been installed by Cale America in the city of Schenectady, New York.

The new parking pay stations accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards in addition to coins.

The new kiosks have dual-language facility and provide instructions in both English and Spanish. It also issues a payment receipt which can be displayed on car dashboard.

The new kiosks will help to reduce enforcement, collections and maintenance costs while creating a modern downtown experience, said, Chris Wallin, city engineer, Schenectady Traffic Services.

Recent studies by UCLA urban planners examined the amount of environmental damage that can result from circling the block looking for a parking spot. The studies say that over the course of a year searching for curb parking in a 15-block business district produced 730 tons of carbon dioxide.

The first phase of the program includes State Street between Nott Street and Broadway, Clinton Street between Liberty and Union, and Union Street between Jay and Lafayette streets.

The pay stations include the facility that enables the payment options by plate, mobile app and EMV-certified card in the future. It is made sure that the technology meets today’s needs as well as includes the needs of community in coming years, said Gary McCarthy, Mayor, Schenectady.
