Morrisons is unveiling a new environmentally friendly wine screw cap that will reduce its carbon footprint.

Morrisons is the fourth largest chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom.

The supermarket is taking trials of the innovative ‘Green Leaf’ (GL) cap, manufactured by Italian firm Enoplastic, on 75cl bottles of its own brand Soave wine.

The new seal uses the same technology and materials as a standard screw cap with 64 percent less aluminum.

Once opened, the cap can be removed completely, making it easier for the bottle to get recycled.

Besides, it occupies less space during transportation which will reduce the size of cap shipments to the bottling plant by around 60 percent.

It is a matter of proud to be the first major supermarket to bring the GL closure to the UK market, said, Steve Mosey, category director, Morrisons BWS.

This new launch displays the ambition to drive innovation in the category which the BWS [beer, wine and spirits] team has worked hard to keep fresh and relevant to customers. It feels proud to take responsibility of own carbon reduction while keeping prices low, added Mosey.

The supermarket aims to reduce total emissions by 30 percent by 2020.
