Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has signed an announcement favoring Russia’s plans to become an International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) member, reports Wind Power Monthly.

Irena, based in UAE, aims renewable energy promotion in countries by directing them on investment promotion policies and sharing technology developments in this segment.

Currently, Irena has 132 members, with 37 states, and now Russia has expressed its willingness to be a member of the organization.

Russian cabinet in its recent statement on this issue commented that it is ready to pay membership to the agency in 2015.

According to the Russian wind energy association (RAWI), by joining Irena, Russia will be provided adequate support to develop global renewable energy contributing to improve international standards.

The Russian wind market remains largely untapped and foreign companies are keen to invest in the country, provided government provides relaxation in concerned laws.

Earlier, Kremlin had set a goal of 55 percent of wind components to be made domestically, later rising it to 65 percent in 2016-2020. However, now the target may be reduced to 36 percent and 49 percent respectively.

In a recent initiative, Goldwind, Chinese-turbine manufacturer was searching for investment options in wind sector in Russia.
