Staples Canada releases sustainability achievement for Q2 14

Staples Canada has announced an expansion to its Bullfrog Power partnership to include four Copy & Print Production locations and its Q2 2014 sustainability achievements.

It is planning to expand partnership with Bullfrog Power to support renewable energy by bullfrog powering its Copy & Print Production Centers in Burnaby, BC; Mississauga, ON; Laval, QC and Calgary, AB.

They will be reducing the environmental impact of most energy-intensive copy and print jobs through this partnership.

Staples Canada head offices have been bullfrog powered with 100 percent clean, pollution-free energy since April 2013, said, Pete Gibel, vice president, merchandising, Staples Canada, chair, Staples Canada Environmental Committee.

This support will reduce more than 1,800 tons of carbon emissions.

As part of the sustainability program, Staples Canada partners with Call2Recycle to collect and recycle batteries in every Staples store. The retailer has set a goal of collecting 100,000 kg of batteries in 2014.

In addition, it gives customers the option to drop off used ink and toner cartridges at every store location. Schools are encouraged to order a free ink cartridge recycling bin through the Staples Canada School Recycling program.

Staples Canada, along with eCycle Solutions, collects electronics in almost 260 retail locations. Working with TerraCycle and Newell Rubbermaid, Staples Canada takes back used writing instruments.

Through the Driver Take Back program, Staples collect used batteries, electronics and ink cartridges from customers when delivering orders. The program is currently only active in certain areas.

Staples have announced a branded line of eco-friendly school supplies with Acco and Me to We. With the purchase of a Me to We product, consumers direct a percentage to a family or child from a Free The Children community in Latin America, Africa or Asia.

Moreover, for back-to-school season, Staples offers the eco-responsible products like Filler Paper, Sugarcane-Based Notebook, Poly Report Cover, Fuel K2 Sandwich box: made using an eco-design approach and HP Pavilion x360 Convertible Laptop that is ENERGY STAR Qualified, EPEAT Silver registered, low halogen with mercury-free display backlights and arsenic-free display glass packed in recycled materials.

Business cards and postcards made from 100 percent recycled materials are now available and Step Forward 80 percent Wheat Straw Copy Paper is being introduced soon.

Recently, Staples completed a transition to more eco-responsible packaging for the brand surge protector category, featuring reduced plastic content.

Through its Lights Out program, Staples stores operate under reduced light levels during the summer months.
