Americans purchase their 250,000th Plug-In car

Americans have bought their 250,000th, plug-in electrified vehicles (PEVs) last month.

The figure was counted by the plug-in passenger vehicle sales since 2008, and the launch of the Tesla Roadster, to the present.

In January this year, around 172,000 PEVs had been sold in US, including 1,800 Roadsters, 1,600 Fisker Karmas, and 500 Mini Es.

By the end of August, the U.S. market had seen 78,609 plug-in cars, which included 37,820 battery electric vehicles, and 40,789 plug-in hybrids.

Out of these250, 000 plug-ins, more than 75,000 were sold in California only, according to the Center for Sustainable Energy.

It shows that 73,455 plug-ins less about 2,309 Chevy Volts that were not rebate eligible.

Further, there were 67,698 Chevy Volt, 61,063 Nissan Leaf and 31,650 Tesla Model S. out of 160,00 of PEVs.

Last month, battery EVs also achieved their best single month of sales, at 6,483 units. The Nissan Leaf, has performed well with 3,186 units sold.

Besides, the Chevy Volt, which has been down last year performed well this year with 2,511 sales. The Cadillac ELR recorded 196 units sale.

If Ford is compared with Fusion Energi and C-Max Energi, were sold by 1,222 and 1,050 units respectively.

BMW’s new i3 made a sales record of 1,025 for both range-extended and pure BEV versions and the i8 plug-in hybrid got nine units sold.

Tesla had seen 1,200 Model S units sold, the reduction in value attributed to a temporarily closed production plant in Fremont, Calif.

Overall, since 2008 the market consumed 15.5 million vehicles, and year to date has bought 11.3 million.

Updates are going on for Volt and the Prius plug-in hybrid, with Leaf being the next in the line.

With more newcomers launching their first plug-ins and others planning the launch a second wave of PEVs will be online in the next year or two.

On the other hand, consumers yet have to catch on the benefits of plug-in cars.

Latest, hydrogen fuelled vehicles include Honda’s FCX Clarity, and Toyota’s FCV sedan. Already Hyundai is offering its Tucson FCV and Daimler.

The advantage of plug-in vehicles is that they can take benefit of a readily available national electric grid including other factors. They’ve been hyped as a solution with far more potential and they have a numerical beginning for a million and counting.
