Mitsubishi’s S-EIV saves on Tokyo Metro power

Mitsubishi Electric has announced that its Station Energy Saving Inverter (S-EIV), being operated at Tokyo Metro’s Myoden Station since June, has contributed a daily power savings of approx. 600kWh, or enough to power about 60 households.

The electricity produced by regenerative brakes supplies power to nearby running trains, but not all of the electricity is consumed.

S-EIV delivers the additional regenerative electricity through direct method. There is no need for a secondary battery and it converts the DC power to AC preventing any kind of vibration or harmonic frequencies.

Recently, Tokyo Metro installed this inverter at Myoden Station, where it saved up to 576 kWh per day and up to 661kWh per day on holidays.

The silicon carbide (SiC) power modules contribute to the compact size and low weight of S-EIV. The high-frequency link inverter helps for installation in tight spaces like the end of a station platform. Its drip-proof, dustproof and anticorrosion covering provide protection from rough weather conditions.

In addition, remote operation of S-EIV is possible with a monitoring and operation board kept in the station’s electrical room and keeps a record of the power generated. The data can be downloaded to a PC or mobile device via Wi-Fi.

Mitsubishi Electric develops energy management solutions and these inverters equipped with all-SiC power modules, enable efficient use of the regenerative electricity produced by braking. S-EIV builds on that to realize an energy-management system that directly delivers the surplus regenerative electricity to station facilities for significant energy savings, said Takahiro Kikuchi, executive officer, president, Public Utility Systems.
