Falmouth marine firm secures Scotland tidal energy project

Falmouth marine engineers Mojo Maritime have won a contract on a revolutionary Scottish tidal energy project, reports Western Morning News.

The company has entered into an agreement with James Fisher Marine Services for a 398MW MeyGen Inner Sound tidal project at the Pentland Firth, Scotland.

Construction is expected to commence by the end of 2014, with first power to be grid connected by 2016.

Through this project, company aims to yield the tidal resource of one of the most energetic sites in Europe.

During the first phase of construction, the offshore installation activities will include the installation of four 1.5MW turbines, support structures and export cables.

Moreover, Mojo will provide substantial marine operational and engineering know-how for the construction, design, planning and execution of the subsea cable, foundation and turbine installation in next two years.

The offshore front end engineering research on the initial stages of the project were also conducted by Mojo.

The MeyGen Inner Sound project represents a step change in the tidal energy industry and Mojo is delighted to be continuing its involvement, stated, Richard Parkinson, MD, Mojo.

As MeyGen’s supply chain partner for the offshore marine installation element, this agreement with Mojo will enable to provide considerable marine operational expertise underpinned by their specialist marine project management support for the successful installation of the tidal array, explained, Alan Heslop, project manager, JFMS.

In addition, the project is 86.5 per cent owned by Atlantis Resources and 13.5 per cent owned by Scottish Enterprise.
