Volkswagen has plans to launch more than 20 models of battery-driven cars in China over the next few years, reports Reuters.
In the near future, Volkswagen will be offering Chinese drivers over 20 NEVs, from small cars to large-sized SUVs, from plug-in hybrids to pure electric cars, commented, Jochem Heizmann, head, Volkswagen, China.
At present, Volkswagen is launching a week-long campaign to promote e-mobility in China’s financial hub at Shanghai.
In pure electric car market, Volkswagen is lagging behind its rivals including BMW, Tesla Motors and Nissan Motor in sales competition.
Previously, company planned to introduce more than 15 electric or plug-in hybrid cars in China and other local produced brands it owns by 2018.
In a recent initiative, Volvo Car has divulged a plug-in hybrid car in Beijing as new-energy vehicles are catching popularity in the world’s largest auto market.
This S60L plug-in hybrid is expected to be in markets by the first half of 2015. It will be the first premium new-energy vehicle to be mass-produced in China.

China, suffering from worst air pollution, has increased efforts to promote use of electric cars, backed up by incentive policies, tougher fuel-efficiency and emission rules.
Beijing has set a forceful target of putting 5 million green vehicles on Chinese roads by 2020.
