It is estimated that by 2030, the wind energy segment in Romania will complement approximately EUR 4.5 billion to the national economy.
In the last twenty years, Romania has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent per capita.
Minister of Environment and Climate Change in Romania Attila Korodi revealed these figures in a meeting of the high-level segment of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP20) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Lima.
Out of the total energy consumption in the country, the contribution of renewable energy has reached up to 40 percent in 2013.
In addition, nearly 10,000 jobs were created in renewable energy sector of the country during this period.
It is to be noted that, EU Member States have already decided to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent until 2030.
This effort is appreciable, but on a global level it is insufficient as EU emissions’ share constitutes only 8 percent of total global emissions, according to Korodi.
In Romania, grid operators are obliged to connect renewable energy plants to their grids and transmit electricity from renewable sources as a priority.
The wind farm generating capacity has soared to 1,794 MW in 2012, from just 13.1 megawatts in 2009.
In 2011, green certificates were made mandatory for energy distributors for every megawatt hour of power they sold, the influence of which was highly favorable for wind energy development.
In a climate of optimism, Romania was placed at No. 13 on a list of 40 nations ranked by their attractiveness for investment in renewables by an international consulting firm in 2013.
