Tank Rast to set up 400 quick EV charging spots in Germany

NISSAN

Germany is planning to have one million electric cars on the roads by 2020, said a news report quoting Transport Ministry.

To boost the demand, Germany is expanding its EV charging infrastructure, an official at the Transport Ministry said.

According to an official statement from the Transport Ministry, German motorway services operator Tank Rast will soon set up quick service charging stations and parking spots at its 400 sites by 2017. The government will support the initiative by funding the cost of installing the cables and construction works, the report said.

EV charging infrastructure is integral to the adoption of electric vehicles in any country. Concerns about the availability of charging infrastructure was one of the factors that undermined sales of electric vehicles in Germany. High costs of EVs also pose challenge to the growth of the market.

Currently Germany has 100 quick service charging stations, which allow drivers recharge the batteries in less than an hour.  In addition to these, there are about 4,800 charging stations that run on alternating current, but they take much longer time to recharge the EVs.

Germany has only 24,000 electric cars out of about 3-million cars, according to government data.
