BMW i8 has been declared World Green Car at New York International Auto Show.

The German carmaker is winning an honor for one of its vehicles at the show for the second consecutive year now. And, it’s the third time a car from BMW stables has received such an honour since the awards were instituted in 2008.

Last year, BMW i3 was adjudged World Green Car. In 2008 world green car award was bestowed on BMW 118d.

The BMW i8 employs light weight built up and has plug-in-hybrid drive technology — two key reasons that prompted the International jury to confer the title on the i8.

The car has won the International Paul Pietsch Award and Top Gear Magazine’s global car of the year award.

The i8 sports a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine coupled with BMW TwinPower technology and an electric motor.

The sport car generates 363hp and can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 4.4 seconds. The carbon reinforced central hub of the machine helps it achieve the quick acceleration.

The i8 also boasts a 37 km range powered exclusively by its electric motor.

BMW i8 has been chosen from among 10 new cars across the world. The entrants have been selected based on freshness of a vehicle (even revised versions) and that 10 units have been sold between January 1, 2014 and May 31, 2015.
