Globals sale of electric drive commercial vehicles to hit 160,000 by 2023

According to a new Navigant report, worldwide sales of electric drive and electric-assisted commercial vehicles are will grow from 16,000 in 2014 to around 160,000 in 2023.

The report also says that the global penetration of electric-drive trucks and buses will remain low increasing from 0.4 percent in 2014 to 2.9 percent in 2023.

Nevertheless, dense urban areas where governments are taking steps to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases will experience highest penetration levels.

The highest sales penetration rate for a country is expected to be in Japan, where it is forecast to reach 21.2 percent by 2023.

The electric powered commercial vehicles have always been a challenge to automobile industry, due to the size of the battery packs and the space needed to store them.

In addition, the battery should be sufficient to deliver needed energy to drive heavy vehicles during long transportation.

However, with the improvement of battery technology electric hybrid vehicles are gaining traction in commercial applications.

According to the research, the diesel hybrid drive will remain the most popular of the electrically assisted medium- and heavy-duty vehicle powertrains.

Besides, within urban fleets where daily mileage is average, the battery-electric commercial vehicles will see growth in demand.
