Electric Vehicle segment of UK has so far achieved a total number of 13,000 electric cars and vans for the first time, reports next Greencar.
The target was accomplished with recent announcement from Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) that 11,260 claims were made through the Plug-in Car Grant scheme.
The OLEV has also reported that, 637 claims were made through the Plug-in Van Grant scheme as of 30 June, 2014.
Considering all 1,379 electric cars and vans, the total UK light-duty electric fleet counts up to 13,276, as vehicles are delivered and registered for use on UK roads.
On analyzing the number of fully electric and plug-in hybrid models presently available in UK, the strength of electric market growth can be evaluated.
In 2011, while only 9 EVs were available for the major manufacturers, it increased to 18 in 2013, and now stands at 21 with more models due for launch in 2014-15, says the report.

The sale chart shows that Nissan LEAF continues to be the UK market leader, with 3,845 vehicles registered in the UK representing over a third of all EV sales in the UK.
The second and third places are occupied by two plug-in hybrids, the Vauxhall Ampera.
On the other hand, latest entrants to the market, the BMW i3 and the Renault ZOE are doing well with 513 and 462 sales respectively. The ZOE is gaining popularity across Europe.
Recently launched Tesla Model S and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV are also performing well throughout the year 2014.
In July, the Outlander PHEV outsold all other vehicles which qualified for the Plug-in Car Grant by government, accounting for 43 percent of applications, stated Mitsubishi.
