General Electric (GE) has launched a software and hardware solution that boosts efficiency of power facilities such as digital wind farms.

Named Digital Power Plant (DPP), the management system creates a “Digital Twin” of the entire complex. Powered by GE’s Predix platform, DPP is “a collection of physics-based methods and digital technologies used to model the present state of every asset in a digital wind farm”.

The technology allows utilities to monitor and manage each aspect of power generation ecosystem to generate electricity cleanly, efficiently and securely, according to a statement issued by GE.

Centralized power generation is expected to account for close to 95 percent of the energy mix by 2025.

GE believes DPP will help utility and industrial customers to harness information technologies to optimize the underlying infrastructure that generates electricity.

The Predix platform, the statement notes, provides secure cloud to support scale and requirements of industrial data and has built-in security and governance features that allow developers to quickly build, test and deploy applications for highly regulated industries.
