Manipur Renewable Energy Development Agency (MANIREDA) is getting a 100-kilowatt-peak floating power plant installed on the Loktak lake.

Arka Ignou Community College of Renewable Energy, which successfully installed a 10 kWp floating solar project in Rajarhat, has been roped in as a consultant for the project.

It will fix design parameters and specifications, and will also assist MANIREDA in finalizing tender and issue of work order.

The Times of India has reported that the project could become the largest such venture of the country once completed.

According to the report, the floating plant will be established near the Sendra tourist resort on Loktak lake. The lake is the largest fresh water body in the North East.

The project is to be taken up under the program for off-grid and decentralized solar applications of the ministry of new and renewable energy.

Toward the end of May, Development of North East Region (DoNER) minister Jitendra Singh had announced the revivial of a 400-kilowatt hydel power project in Thoubal district. He also announced that a transmission line would be laid for evacuating power from the project.

The Rs124-crore project was only awaiting completion of final technical formalities, the minister said.

It is expected to help the state provide consumers with uninterrupted power for at least 18 hours each day.
