Schneider Electric and Saft are to jointly install energy storage systems to be integrated with two solar power projects being developed by French company Langa Group on the island of Corsica.

The projects were awarded to Langa under the French public tender schemes — Commission de Régulation de l’Energie (CRE).

The solar projects are being developed near Corte and Castifao, two sites on the island. Each project will have an installed capacity of 1 MWp and storage capacity of 1 MWh. And each would produce more than 1,300 MWh annually, which is in compliance with the CRE specifications.

The consortium of Schneider and Saft will be designing, supplying and installing the storage equipment and the associated management system. It will continue to provide maintenance services when the project begins operations.

The photovoltaic projects that Langa plans to construct are expected to meet the average electricity needs of more than 400 households in Corsica each year.

Under the agreement, Schneider Electric, which leads the consortium, will implement solar energy storage solutions including PVBox for solar power conversion, ESBox for battery power conversion and Energy Management System (EMS) for global equipment management and control of Saft batteries. It also would provide project engineering and services to guarantee optimal performance of the system.

Schneider will also take care of the interconnection of components within the projects besides linking them with the electric distribution network.

Saft, in turn, will deploy its energy storage solution Intensium Max+ 20E comprising a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery of around 1 MWh in a 20 foot container.

The container also includes thermal and safety management systems, in addition to the operational battery management through a BMS (Battery Management System), the interface with the Schneider Electric control system.

The Langa project is part of a series of contracts Saft has won for Li-ion storage systems for island grids around the world.

According to a report, Schneider and Saft signed the contract with Langa in June. They will be completing installation of the storage systems at both sites and grid connecting both by the end of the year.
