The journey of Solar Roadways founders Scott and Julie Brusaw has reached Route 66, which is known as the Main Street of America or the Mother Road.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), with the help of Solar Roadways, has announced plans to solarize the historic roadway that runs from Chicago through America’s Midwest to California.

MoDOT will not only make Route 66 a smooth highway for vehicles, but also make it self-glowing with embedded LEDs.

Whatmore, the road will replace tons of fossil fuels for energy production. The clean energy produced can power vehicles, traffic lights, among other facilities. The surplus energy can be supplied to grid.

Currently MoDOT is planning to upgrade a small stretch of the roadway. The agency hopes to lay the first panels starting with Historic Route 66 Welcome Center by the end of the year.

The announcement was made when MoDOT unveiled a series of pilot projects recently to address future transportation and funding at the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission meeting held on June 8.
