SunEdison plans to purchase vanadium flow batteries of more than 100 MWh to power rural electrification and micro-grid projects in India.

The US renewable energy developer has stated on its website that the move will help 1.5 billion people around the world who lack basic access to electricity.

The company is starting the project by bringing solar electricity to 54 villages in India that have a combined population of about 7,800 people.

SunEdison will be transferring operation of the micro-grids to the local population after five years of their going online. The micro-grids will contain batteries paired with 241kW photovoltaic arrays.

Earlier, SunEdison had announced plans to build more than 20,000 megawatts of solar energy capacity in India by 2022.

The company has completed a 7.7 MW solar array for a brake company in India, an array for AT&T and the 81.6 MW Regulus solar facility in Kern County, California.

The company also took up a 22 MW distributed rooftop solar project in Los Angeles.

Last December the solar solutions provider partnered with TerraForm Power and JPM Capital Corporation to invest in a solar energy development fund.

In accordance with the agreement SunEdison announced plans to invest $75 million toward the fund.
