Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa has received a turnkey order for the 65-megawatt San Pedro II wind farm in Chile. The San Pedro complex is expected to have capacity of 101 megawatts peak once phase II is completed.

The project is coming up on the island of Chiloe, and will deploy the 5-MW platform of Gamesa for the first time in Latin America.

The company has received the supply, install and commission contract from Transantarctic Energia and Bosques de Chiloe. Under the contract, Gamesa will install 13 of its G128-5.0 MW turbines on the site.

According to a statement, Gamesa will be delivering the turbines during the second quarter of 2016 and will commission the wind park in early 2017.

The company hasn’t disclosed the value of the contract, though.

Gamesa had supplied 18 G90-2.0 MW turbines with a combined capacity of 36 megawatts during the first phase of the project.

The completed project is expected to meet the entire power requirement of the island.

Last year Gamesa unveiled G132-5.0 MW a version of its 5-megawatt turbines that is more efficient than its G128-5.0 megawatt product. The turbine was unveiled at the Global Offshore Wind trade fair.

The company said in a statement that the new turbine was certified by independent expert DNV-GL.

The new turbine featured blade length of 64.5 meters and rotor diameter of 132 meters. It was touted to have the ability to generate 3 percent more power than the G128-5.0 MW.

The process of certification of the turbine is expected to be completed within this year.

With huge increase in offshore power generation, Gamesa hopes to be in tune with the growth supported by its new turbine.
