Siemens and Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind plant

Renewable energy major Siemens today announced the official inauguration of Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind power plant.

Siemens has supplied 78 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3.6 megawatts and a rotor diameter of 120 meters.

The wind plant has the capacity to supply electricity to around 320,000 German households.

Siemens is also providing service and maintenance for the turbines for an initial period of 10 years.

Borkum Riffgrund 1 is owned by DONG Energy (50 percent) and the investors Kirkbi Invest and William Demant Invest (50 percent together).

Borkum Riffgrund 1 is the sixth offshore wind project to be handed over to the respective customer by Siemens in the fiscal year.

Michael Hannibal, Offshore CEO of the Wind Power and Renewables Division within Siemens AG, said: “Siemens has already erected an offshore capacity of more than 5.8 gigawatts, with two gigawatts going online in the last fiscal year alone.”

The goal of Siemens is to drive power generating costs from offshore wind down below 10 euro-cents per kilowatt-hour by 2020.

Siemens said its recent projects include the 288 MW German North Sea offshore wind power plant Dan Tysk, 576 MW Gwynt y Mor, 210 MW Westermost Rough, 288 MW Butendiek wind farm in the German North Sea and 288 MW EnBW Baltic 2 project in the German Baltic Sea.
