GE 12V250 marine diesel engine now EPA Tier 4 certified

GE Marine’s 12V250 marine diesel engine has achieved U.S. EPA Tier 4 Certification.

The non-Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology applied by GE successfully achieved emission requirements, leading to certification.

GE’s non-SCR solution is based on the technological advancements of the L250 and V250 engines and requires no supplemental equipment or fluids like urea.

At present, the company is aiming to achieve U.S. EPA Tier 4 and IMO Tier III Certification for other marine engine models utilizing the same non-SCR technology.

Moreover, GE Marine is also striving to achieve U.S. EPA Tier 4 and IMO Tier III certification for its 16-cylinder V250 and 6- and 8-cylinder L250 models that utilize non-SCR technology to reduce emissions by 70 percent without the use of urea.

GE compared its U.S. EPA Tier 4 and International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III compliant in-engine, urea-free solution with a competitor’s solution that use urea based after-treatment.

During the comparative study, GE found out that its solution takes up about only 25 percent of the engine room space required by the competitive solution.

In addition, it weighs about only 25 percent of the competitor’s solution; and does not require additional onboard storage for urea or dockside support infrastructure for urea storage and processing.

In 2013, GE Marine successfully completed an extensive emissions-testing program for the first 12V250 Marine Diesel Engine.

The GE 12V250 engine has greater power over the IMO Tier II model and its new two-stage turbo charging also offers a faster response time.

By 2014 end, GE made the first delivery of its 12V250 marine diesel engines to Cummins Mid-South.

These new engines met EPA Tier 4 and International Maritime Organization Tier III emissions standards, reducing nitrous oxide emissions by 70 percent when compared to EPA Tier 2 or IMO Tier II.

Cummins used five 12V250 engines into gensets designed to power Oceaneering’s new vessel, MSV Ocean Evolution, which is expected to launch in early 2016.
