Itron helps Barbados Water Authority minimize water loss

Itron announced partnership with the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) to help the utility minimize water loss throughout the island.

Itron, through its regional distributor Innotech Utilities, will replace the utility’s existing mechanical water meters with Itron’s solid-state Intelis water meters to better monitor water usage.

Providing access to potable water is challenging for BWA because of drought and non-revenue water. To address water loss, the utility chose to collaborate with Itron to improve the monitoring of its water supply network and decrease non-revenue water.

By replacing its old meters with Itron’s state-of-the-art ultrasonic water meters, BWA will be enabled to improve operations, detect leaks, monitor system performance and improve water efficiency.

The meters are equipped with advanced monitoring intelligence, which will alert the utility to potential problems such as tampering and abnormal or drops in water pressure.

“As the sole supplier of potable water to the public of Barbados, we recognized the need to develop a program that would prevent water loss and quickly detect leaks,” said Keithroy Halliday, general manager, BWA. “With Itron’s ultrasonic water meters, we will be able to accurately measure actual consumption and detect leaks for years to come.”

Gavin van Tonder, president of Itron’s Water business line, added, “With our water metering solution, the utility will be equipped to protect its water supply by closely monitoring its system and accurately measuring consumption which benefits its consumers.”
