SunPower to sell power to NV energy from 100-MW solar PV project in Boulder

Solar photovoltaic solutions provider SunPower has signed a 20-year agreement with NV Energy for supply of clean energy. The agreement is subject to approval from Nevada’s Public Utilities Commission.

SunPower is to provide electricity to the Nevadan utility from a 100-megawatt solar photovoltaic project which it now owns. The project named Boulder Solar is located in Eldorado Valley, Boulder City, Nevada.

SunPower acquired Boulder Solar earlier this year from KOMIPO America, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Korea Midland Power.

KOMIPO will continue to participate in the construction and operation of the project, which is to go into commercial operation in 2016. In due course, SunPower will be offering the project for sale to 8point3 Energy Partners, the yieldCo that the company formed jointly with First Solar.

Output from Boulder Solar would be adequate to meet average power requirements of more than 15,000 households, according to Solar Energy Industries Association estimates, a statement said.

And SunPower will be designing and integrating its Oasis Power Plant system at the site. Oasis is SunPower’s fully integrated, modular solar power block solution for utility-scale solar power projects. They are designed to optimize land use and engineered to save costs and time for installation.

Currently SunPower has two other solar power plants under construction in Nevada. One is a 15-megawatt plant at Nellis Air Force Base and the other is a 19.9-megawatt plant in Lyon County.

The company has been operating a 13.2-megawatt power plant at Nellis Air Force Base since 2007.

Elsewhere, SunPower has collaborated with Dominion Retail, a subsidiary of Dominion, on a marketing initiative aimed to provide solar power systems of SunPower to homeowners in New Jersey. Dominion will market the systems between August and September this year.

By an estimate, New Jersey is one of the fastest growing solar markets in the United States.
