Siemens announced its order to supply 157 wind turbines for three South African wind projects coming up in the province of Northern Cape.

According to the contract, Siemens will be responsible for the service and maintenance of the farm for next 10 years.

The installation of the turbines is expected to start from August 2015.
Commissioning of the three projects is scheduled from early 2016 to the end of 2017.

Jeffrey’s Bay Wind Farm, developed by a consortium led by Mainstream Renewable Power in partnership with Siemens was commissioned in the middle of 2014.

The three wind power plants have a combined generation capacity of 360 MW.

Siemens will supply its 2.3 MW machines from the G2 series for the wind power plants in Khobab, Loeriesfontein 2 and Noupoort.

The 140 MW Khobab wind farm and the 140 MW Loeriesfontein 2 wind farm, are located in the Namakwa District Municipality.

The 80 MW Noupoort wind farm is located in Umsobomvu Local Municipality, 400 kilometers north of Port Elizabeth.

All projects will be equipped with the Siemens SWT-2.3-108 wind turbine with a rotor diameter of 108 meters and towers with a hub height of 99.5 meters.

In a recent development, Siemens bagged an order from Pattern Energy Group to supply and install SWT-2.3-108 87 wind turbines for the Logan’s Gap Wind project in the US.

The 200 MW project, located in Comanche County, Texas, will create clean energy to power 50,000 homes in Texas annually.

In another venture, Siemens has completed and handed over the first North Sea grid project BorWin2 to the network operator TenneT.

The 800 MW capacity provided by the connection will be sufficient to supply one million homes.

As part of expanding to offshore wind projects, Siemens has inked a chartering deal with ship owner Bernhard Schulte to build two service operations vessels (SOV) for service and maintenance operations of Gemini and Sandbank / Dan Tysk offshore wind power plants in North Sea.

South Africa is on the path of achieving the goal set by government of installing 3,725 MW of renewable energy capacity through its Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPP).
