BMW has planned to increase orders of electric vehicle battery cells by 20 to 30 percent from Samsung SDI in 2016.

BMW, German premium automakers, sold 5,396 i3 cars in the first half of this year, compared with a total of 1.02 million vehicles it sold during this period.

Klaus Draeger, purchasing chief, BMW, said, “ Samsung SDI from South Korea will increase its supply for BMW’s i3 and i8 electric cars and will also supply for future hybrid models starting with the X5 plug-in hybrid.”

Due to range anxiety, a challenge mostly faced by EV car industry, clients still prefer fuel cell operated vehicles. BMW is doing a research on a fuel cell vehicle system, added Draeger.

BMW also plans to boost purchasing from South Korean suppliers for around 300 million euros in value this year.
