Cyan, the software technology firm has secured Rs 9.5 crore (£1million) worth purchase order for a pilot smart meter project from an Indian public utility.
Enzen Global Solutions has undertaken the smart meter implementation program for the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESC) in Karnataka.
Cyan will supply 21,000 smart meters as part of an “end-to-end” solution to Enzen according to the agreement.
Cyan, through its CyLec solution will supply 865MHz RF mesh communication network including the modules, data concentrator units and head end software, a Meter Data Acquisition System and 21,824 smart meters.
In addition, Cyan will provide management services to the utility for a period of two years.
The project will be activated in phases with the first meters installed, commissioned and live before the end of 2015 and the remaining in the first half of 2016.
Through this order, a public utility is using advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) in India as an effort to reduce meter reading costs and power theft and to manage peak load and power outage.
This is the first of 14 smart grid pilots under the Smart Grid Task Force in India being funded by India’s Ministry of Power to be initiated.
Last year, Cyan has won two private utility projects at Tata Power and Essel.

CESC supplies more than more than 1.5mln domestic customers across five districts of Karnataka.
At present, India has 200 million legacy meters currently deployed and it is estimated it will install 130 million smart meters by 2021.
The Indian government has committed to spend billions of dollars on smart grid infrastructure with a cumulative spending of $21.6 billion expected through the period 2015-2025.
