Turkey is to auction 2 GW of wind power generation capacity next year. The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) announced the plan recently.

According to a seenews.renewables report, EPDK will accept preliminary applications for licences to build wind parks between October 3 and October 7, 2016.

The wind power projects proposed to be auctioned are expected to be operational by 2020.

Poyry, a Finnish consulting and engineering firm, said in a report recently that Turkey could reach grid parity for onshore wind in 2019.

And the country stands to become the first in Europe to achieve the feat, simply due to high wholesale electricity prices.

The Turkish ‘National Renewable Energy Action Plan’ announced in February had proposed to increase the country’s existing renewable energy generation capacity to 61GW by 2023.

The key resources considered for development were hydro, wind and solar generation.

As of 2013, Turkey had more than 22 gigawatts of hydropower generation capacity, but only 2.76 gigawatts of installed wind generation and no installed solar projects, the government reported.

According to the new plan, Turkey proposes to develop 34 gigawatts of hydropower generation capacity; 20 gigawatts of wind; 5 gigawatts of solar; and 1GW in geothermal and biomass generating capacity by 2030.

The country also aims to be meeting 10 percent of the energy needs of its transport sector through renewable energy by 2030, the report stated.
