Ephesus Lighting, based in Syracuse will provide LED lighting for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl XLIX, to be held at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Feb. 1 2015.

The first NFL game to be played under LED lights took place between the Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Being an indoor stadium, the lights are needed for all events.

These LED lights can be turned on instantly, without the 20-minute warm-up required by the metal halides, said, Joe Casper, CTO, founder, Ephesus.

At present, the company employs 22 people and has shifted its office to Onondaga Tower.

Each of Ephesus’s 20-inch-wide lighting fixtures is powerful and it took only 312 of them to light the 63,400-seat stadium, in place of 753 metal halide lights.

These LEDs have been operational for over 70,000 hours in more than 30 indoor and outdoor sports and entertainment venues across North America, including Duke University’s Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium and the Canadian Tire Centre.

In addition, the stadium will see a 75 percent reduction in the electricity required to operate the lights. The new lights are rated to last 50 years and use only 310,000 watts of energy. Besides, the cooling costs will be reduced considerably.

The NFL experienced a disaster at the Feb. 3, 2013, during Super Bowl match between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers. A power outage knocked out half the lights at the Superdome in New Orleans shortly after the start of the third quarter.
